The school has a structured approach to the teaching of phonics which is based around the letters and sounds scheme when starting school in Reception. It is then taught throughout Key Stage 1, and where appropriate to support individual needs in KS2.
All children are taught maths, English and science in line with the new National Curriculum. Children are taught in mixed age classes to ensure challenge and progression as appropriate, work is differentiated and varied to meet the needs of every child, whilst ensuring curriculum coverage and depth of learning.
The Physical Education curriculum ensures a wide range of high quality experiences for all the children. All children have 2 hour each week of Physical Education alongside a wide range of additional experiences for every child through daily informal physical activity, out of school hours learning and competitive and non competitive intra and inter school competition. Every child experiences Gymnastic activities for a full term alongside Swimming for all children in Key Stage 2 who cannot yet swim 25m. The remainder of the lessons include athletic activities, striking and fielding games, outdoor and adventurous activities, net and wall games, and invasion games. There is considerable importance placed on fundamentals for KS1 children.
Music is taught weekly in every class. All children in KS2 learn to play the recorder. Children can also learn the guitar as part of the extended curriculum.
Geography and History
The Geography and History curriculum is taught as part of a rolling programme across the classes based on themed content. Please see below for a detailed overview.
As part of the Leicester Diocese of Education we follow the agreed Leicester and Diocesan Agreed Syllabus for RE.
